A Very Unusual Post,

Kasey

When our little Lion, our grandson Leon, was in hospital before Christmas recovering from what was a very serious major operation. My daughter met Kasey Kelly and her family. By all of my daughter’s descriptions, Kasey is a beautiful child with a truly awe inspiring temperament considering the pain that she must be in. A Piece has been published in a national news paper in relation to Kasey and her on-going plight. It details the current situation pertaining to Kasey, there is a possibility for life saving treatment for Kasey in the States. The treatment not including expenses for travel and accommodation is 450,000. In our country there is the opportunity for us to avail of a fund for foreign care when needs are such. This fund would almost halve the cost of the needed funds. The one thing that is needed is the signature of Kasey’s Oncologist. A signature he refuses to provide on the grounds that he feels it would be un-ethical to do so because he thinks Kasey has no chance.

It hurts me to read this piece because of the pain and emotional misery that is evident in the story. It disgusts me even more that a man of science would stand in the way of any treatment, whether he felt it was hopeless or not. When it comes to a child, even if a course of action appears hopeless, surely it is a worthwhile foolishness to gamble on the chance, however slim, that it may work. Centuries ago we knew the world was flat! Centuries ago we knew that the sun and the planets circled the earth! Imagine what we will know tomorrow! Perhaps somebody should point this out to this Oncologist. Find it in your heart to give this little girl the opportunity for that one piece of possibly worthwhile foolishness.

Please feel free to register your astonishment at the treatment of Kasey Kelly at the above address. While you are doing so, send an email to yoursay@hse.ie to outline your horror. I beg you to do so.
